Read and Feed was founded in November 2007 with the single mission “to strengthen literacy skills and encourage reading for at-risk low-income elementary school children.” Using mobile classrooms, Read and Feed delivers meals to eliminate hunger, tutors to mentor and help children read, and books to build home libraries. Read and Feed volunteers travel to neighborhoods of the “working poor,” who are limited in their ability to provide the time, transportation, energy or financial resources to help their children overcome academic weaknesses. Read and Feed solves this dilemma by allowing the children to walk a short distance from their homes to receive their meals, tutoring and books.
